Melbourne—what a wonderful city! It’s beautiful, there’s a lot to do and the public transportation is great. There’s even a free tram that circles the city and a free bus that visits all the touristy places. Sydney’s going to have to work really hard to win the best Australian city because, right now, Melbourne gets that honor.
The cruise ship terminal is south of town, so we took a bus to get out of the port and then a tram to take us downtown (about 3 km). We took the free bus tour of the city, which makes 13 stops at points of interest and you can get off and on as you want. Because of my foot we didn’t do much walking, but we’re already talking about coming back and staying a while.
We ate lunch along the south bank of the Yarra River—hamburger, fish and chips, and some good Australian beer. Our waiter was surprised that we chose to eat outdoors, rather than inside watching the Super Bowl. He thought all Americans watched the Super Bowl. It was broadcast live on the boat this morning and will be repeated tonight at 9:00 for those who chose to see Melbourne instead.
