2/5/12 Burnie, Tasmania

We’ve made it to OZ! We spent the morning in Burnie, Tasmania. It’s not a very exciting place, but we did enjoy the local crafts and did a little shopping. We also managed to do our laundry. I know, life in the fast lane.

The first  picture shows a view of the harbor in Burnie.

At the Makers Workshop we had a lengthy discussion with a man about paper making, for which Burnie is well known. They make paper from both pine and eucalyptus trees. They also make paper from whatever they find—recycled jeans, hemp and cotton. We even found specialty paper where they added “poo”. Our granddaughters, Jessica and Morgan, will have to do “rock, paper, scissors” to decide which one gets the “roo poo” book marker or the “wombat poo” book marker.

Since we were in a working port, safety and security were foremost in everyone’s mind. Perhaps, however, as picture 2 shows, they got a little carried away with the bagpipe sendoff. Kilt with safety vest—a first!

One problem. I seem to have re-injured the stress-fractured foot. We have had to cancel the Sydney bridge climb—very disappointed. Boot is back on and I’m reasonably crabby. Shore activities are limited, since excessive walking is out.

It’s raining and seas promise to be rough for the remainder of today, but the captain promised sunshine in Melbourne tomorrow.
